Summary

On a windswept moor, an old house guards its secrets。。。 The new stand-alone horror novel from 'a true master of horror。'

All Hallows Hall is a rambling Tudor mansion on the edge of the bleak and misty Dartmoor。 It is not a place many would choose to live。 Yet the former Governor of Dartmoor Prison did just that。 Now he's dead, and his children – long estranged – are set to inherit his estate。

But when the dead man's family come to stay, the atmosphere of the moors seems to drift into every room。 Floorboards creak, secret passageways echo, and wind whistles in the house's famous priest hole。 And then, on the same morning the family decide to leave All Hallows Hall and never come back, their young son Timmy disappears – from inside the house。

Does evil linger in the walls? Or is evil only ever found inside the minds of men?

Stephen King is right- “ God, it’s good”Just read it- awesome storyline- does start out a little slow and lingers a bit in the middle but hang in there it’s worth it- unbelievable ending, worth it。 I highly recommend this book and I can promise it won’t insult your intelligence- he’s a great writer!

This was such a unique horror novel, and unlike anything I've read before! I loved the story, the atmosphere, and the real history that was incorporated! The story was set in modern day, on the Dartmoor moors in Devon, England, and it was such a spooky atmosphere。 Since the author himself is British, he used language and slang that made you feel as if you were really there with the characters。 Overall, I absolutely loved this book because of how unique, clever, and creepy it was。 I can't wait to This was such a unique horror novel, and unlike anything I've read before!

Looking past that part of the novel, it was just okay。 The best parts were the gore and the exorcisms, which felt rushed considering you had to wait nearly the entire book for it to happen。 Loved the historical aspects of the priest holes and the witching room, it was a unique take on a haunted house story。 。。。more

You know how sometimes you read a book where tons of supernatural nonsense is happening and the protagonists refuse to believe it's ghosts, even when it's gotten beyond the point it can be anything else? This was the opposite。 Spooky stuff starts happening and everyone is like, okay, yup, the devil, let's go。 I liked the plot and the lore but I couldn't really get immersed and properly creeped out because the characters didn't feel real。 No one was acting like a real human being! Would give it 3。5/5, but I can't, so I'm being nice and rounding up to a 4/5。 The story was gripping and interesting, but the characters were dull and the dialogue felt forced throughout the whole book。 The writing style made it feel like someone had just written out a movie they'd seen, without bothering to adapt the story to written form。 The pacing felt very movie-like as well, which feels unnatural for books, somehow。 All in all, I enjoyed reading it because the story was interesting, but it Would give it 3。5/5, but I can't, so I'm being nice and rounding up to a 4/5。 The story was gripping and interesting, but the characters were dull and the dialogue felt forced throughout the whole book。 The writing style made it feel like someone had just written out a movie they'd seen, without bothering to adapt the story to written form。 The pacing felt very movie-like as well, which feels unnatural for books, somehow。 All in all, I enjoyed reading it because the story was interesting, but it felt 'off' for the entire time I was reading it。 It also contains a very explicit rape scene that could and should have been left out completely。 。。。more

Really enjoyed this book, when it started I thought it was going to be a thriller about a lost child but the it kept twisting and turning, going in different directions I did not think everything would be able to get wrapped up by the end and we would be left hanging but it ended so well。 great story telling it had a few cheesy moments towards the end but one of my favorite books this year。

Pretty much devoured this in one sitting, bar a few pages from yesterday。Very well written。 Dramatic。 Tense。 Well conceived and convincing in it’s setting across Dartmoor, Devon, England。Full of remarkably imagery that smacks of all sorts of other horror stories and movies。 This was actually screaming ‘make me a movie!’, and doing it repeatedly。The final image of the ‘malevolence’ seriously startled me into me seeing ‘Vigo’ from the famous Ghostbusters II film…。 But worth the read for sure。

Graham masterton has written a haunted house story with a twist。 When their father dies, Rob and his family go back to all hallows hall to wait for the lawyer but pretty soon people start going missing and the Whispering starts。 I really liked how even though this had some supernatural elements, there also was some realism such as the police interaction。 Most of the characters were loveable - there were only two I didn't like。 Mostly they were all helpful and risked alot to help out this family Graham masterton has written a haunted house story with a twist。 When their father dies, Rob and his family go back to all hallows hall to wait for the lawyer but pretty soon people start going missing and the Whispering starts。 I really liked how even though this had some supernatural elements, there also was some realism such as the police interaction。 Most of the characters were loveable - there were only two I didn't like。 Mostly they were all helpful and risked alot to help out this family and I loved that。 I loved the way this supernatural presence is looked at from experts, church officials being one of them。 It was a nice mix to throw in there。 。。。more

I’m quite disappointed with this book。 The premise was very interesting, and I was quite hooked at the beginning。 Then, the plot became overly-supernatural。 It was difficult to follow and even believe。 I usually get hooked on books, but I almost abandoned this one multiple times。 I held on, but then there was an unnecessary, violent, sexual scene that I don’t totally understand。 I sped-read through 75% of the book。 So disappointing。

The idea that this story centers around is a breath of fresh air because it has a great premise。 Unfortunately, the writing left much to be desired and the story lagged and then felt rushed at all the more interesting parts。

This was my first Masterton book。 Overall, I liked it but it did get out of control for me towards the end (had to suspend a lot of belief)。 Some odd metaphors, and I wondered why Timmy's parents (child who went missing) seemed to be so calm and in control。 I found the first 60% or so of the book really entertaining, fast-paced and with lots of intriguing unanswered questions。 I'll read more by Masterton。 This was my first Masterton book。 Overall, I liked it but it did get out of control for me towards the end (had to suspend a lot of belief)。 Some odd metaphors, and I wondered why Timmy's parents (child who went missing) seemed to be so calm and in control。 I found the first 60% or so of the book really entertaining, fast-paced and with lots of intriguing unanswered questions。 I'll read more by Masterton。 。。。more

I like a good old haunted house story once in a while。 The premise of this story was great: haunted house, missing people, suspense etc。 Unfortunately, in terms of execution, my one star is generous。Reading this book, I didn't think this was the work of someone who has had such a prolific writing career。 The way it is written is shallow and unemotional, and didn't draw me in at all。 There is no showing whatsoever。 When something traumatic happened, I almost didn't realise because there was no ch I like a good old haunted house story once in a while。 The premise of this story was great: haunted house, missing people, suspense etc。 Unfortunately, in terms of execution, my one star is generous。Reading this book, I didn't think this was the work of someone who has had such a prolific writing career。 The way it is written is shallow and unemotional, and didn't draw me in at all。 There is no showing whatsoever。 When something traumatic happened, I almost didn't realise because there was no change of pace, it was all 'this happened, then after that, this happened,' all the way through。 And the characters all had exactly the same voice, it was difficult to differentiate between them。 Their reactions to everything that went on were also not realistic - missing child? missing husband? Never mind。 Let's discuss architecture。The horror in the book fell flat for me too。 At several points in the story I actually laughed out loud when I shouldn't have done。 (view spoiler)[Especially the part where Old Dewer turns round in the window, and "flapped his arms" and the part where he's hanging on to the roof of the Honda。 And I can't help thinking, if they knew that he was affected by water, why didn't they just use a hosepipe? CW: I need to start off with there is a r*pe scene about 2/3 into the book。 It’s not super graphic, but if that’s something you, like me need to look out for, it’s in there。 this is the most white male horror movie plot。 It had cliché haunting horror movie/book points。 Enough so that every time one of those popped up I texted my husband, and he asked why I was still reading it。 That being said, female characters are week with nothing to them。 With cliché characteristics that I’m tired of seeing。 CW: I need to start off with there is a r*pe scene about 2/3 into the book。 It’s not super graphic, but if that’s something you, like me need to look out for, it’s in there。 this is the most white male horror movie plot。 It had cliché haunting horror movie/book points。 Enough so that every time one of those popped up I texted my husband, and he asked why I was still reading it。 That being said, female characters are week with nothing to them。 With cliché characteristics that I’m tired of seeing。 With that even the male characters where flat。 It was about till half way through the book when I was finally think “oh, this is original” but let me down as it continues to be the same plot that I’ve already seen a million times before。 If I wasn’t familiar with the folklore about El Silbón (the Whistler) I would have found this more original。 But it just seemed like a whitewash version of that folklore made into a predictable Netflix style horror 3 stars is generous, I could give it 2。5, but I did keep listening and wanting to know how it ended (which I saw coming a mile away) 。。。more
